Laser Cut for the Discriminating Modeler |
One of our CL-415 kits being built for 2 .30 4-strokes
Thanks to Cliff & Terence for the video clip. Great job guys!
This is just a guide so to speak construction is basically the same as E-power just think glow when building build the firewalls for strength and do not forget to fuel proof the nacelles.
First thing to do the nacelles as I'm fitting glow power I'm leaving the 1/2" balsa top off these until the tanks etc are sorted obvious thing to do really! an additional piece of paper is included for this type of power and shows the engine down thrust etc.

and the two complete...until later...will have to get the thrust line marked on before adding to the main wing panels...

Right, onto the build...port
wing first as per instructions....
3/8 by 3/16 Hardwood spars....with the 3" 1/16 sheeting sliced to give the
leading and trailing edges.
The leading edge only being glued to the front half of the spar.

Next the ribs when using glow power [as in this model] 4 extra ribs are provided to go either side of the nacelles...just a matter of butting them up against the nacelle...and zapping them on...

with the ribs in position...the nacelle is not glued into position just yet....but I've left in in the pic to show something like the wing will be like...

Got the starboard one done..[.always quicker after the first]...and the two panels epoxy together....using a straight edge along the ribs to keep everything straight....

A close up of the centre section......the red, shaded area shows where a balsa trialing edge will be used to help support the wing bolts.....arrowed, is the wing dowel ply braces/lugs...

One mod, that I'm doing is to the wing brace...in the pic, the kit braces are 6" long, they are both strong enough...but, as I'm fitting the two 30 four strokes...I'm making a third brace....which goes right out past the nacelles....which will certainly beef if up considerably, for just the penalty of a mere couple of grams...1/8" lite-ply

Next, the ailerons. just built over the plans with the laser cut riblets CA'd in position....easy stuff....here's the first one before the top sheet is added...

Ok Chaps.. little bit more done,
Here's the starboard outer section. with the finished aileron pinned
in place...the very end rib, is angled outward...thus leaving a small
gap..[arrowed]...this is filled in with some scrap balsa,
next I'll epoxy the nacelles in position...and run out two
"Y" leads for throttles / ailerons....
...these
are the size of the ply mounting plate. also in the pic...

Just 1 more more picture before the fuse is started...I'm marking the thrust line on each nacelle, before gluing them on permanently, here's one set on the plan, the firewall has the down thrust pre-set for you!

FUSELAGE CONSTRUCTION
The sides are of 1/8 balsa, 6 pieces, make the first, basic profile...

here's an example of one of the formers...NO4....there
is a "double"doubler
.note
the tabs on the edges to keep everything straight automatically...

Then....just a matter of dry assembly, followed by
the thin CA...quick, straight, and very, very simple....
here is the top nose area...the sides will be pull in slightly for the cockpit
area windows to fit...

and a view of the underside...showing the ply keel installed....there will be a steerable noseleg added too

After a longer than planned break from the C415, I'm pleased to get her on the bench again....next is the fin assembly, the base is of 4 laser cut 1/4 sheet parts, with a space already provided for a flexible snake for the elevator.....here's the set up pinned in position...

by wrapping some making tape where it touches the fin inner, it gives the cyno greater "holding power".....also in the pic, is the two 1/32ply faces for the bottom half of the fin......rudder was built as well at this point...

..and the ply faces now glued onto the fin...with the snake tidied up with some filler...

While I had the 1/4sq and 1/4 by 3/8 strip out of the box, I went ahead and built the stabilizer / elevators...just basic stick building....simple and quick, with good, lightweight balsa stock being supplied...

I also started the work around the
cockpit...some very nice ply laser cutting takes care of the windows...things
starting to take shape a little better now..

and a view of the fuse with the fin and stabilizer pinned in place, to give the overall shape of the aircraft....the large fin really does stand out....behind is the wing...

Back again, with a little done to the fuse this time here's the nose wheel set-up the C415 has twin nose wheels, so I soldered another axel to the main leg....then, the brass tube sleeve is slipped over, before the top tiller arm is screwed in place...

and the rear legs...very easily done....main landing
axels first.....spot of solder to stop them moving about in the copper
tube...then the rear legs binded / clamped in place...

next...the bit of slightly awkward planking needed in
the nose area....the actual nose will be block balsa, but will have to wait for
the underside sheeting to go on first, so that I can blend it in that little bit
tidier etc....added the cockpit floor to, to cover the steering post...the top
sheet, is still not glued in place.

The servos for the rudder / elevator are now in place, along with their snakes [golden rod]...also, the nose steering snake, anchored at three different points

The wing tip floats, are of an 1/8 ply core, with blue foam either side, then sanded to section etc.....will be quite noticeable on the wings.

Time for the engine installation...simple, and straightforward enough.

Servo in place, well below the fuel tank.

I've decided to get some covering on everything is easy, starting from the back, but, once it comes to the nose area, care needed, as there is a sharp nose on her, main worry, was how to go about the windows so I decided to leave the forward top sheeting off, painting the cockpit, and cover the sides...by doing this, I can get in the inside, to trim the covering around the window frames.

Tail feathers when pinned in place they really add the character of the plane.

At the field double checking everything over ready for first flight

\
One change made was to make the tip floats removable
Looks great either way IMHO

Customer's personal comments on the first 2 flights on our CL-415 on glow power ;
Two flights were made she's easy to fly
bit "spongey on it but then was expecting this as all/ most??
The 30 four strokes are perfect, not at all underpowered not overpowered
just nice!! sounds superb landings are just like landing a trainer liner her
up, and let her sink on over the end of the strip
great little flyer, turns heads, looks bigger in the sky than in the pits
dunno why but for a small sports scale twin it does have presence when flown
along the strip shallow banked turns are very pleasing to the eye"
